How to Achieve a Dramatic Bathroom Makeover with Your Existing Layout

The Soulful Haus

We love a good transformation, especially one that doesn’t require knocking down walls or reconfiguring floorplans. That was exactly the case with this 90s master bathroom refresh. Without changing the footprint, we took a space that felt heavy, overly warm, and a bit dated -- and gave it a fresh, timeless update.

Of course, we didn’t just make aesthetic changes. We followed our ChiDesign approach to ensure this transformation would truly work for the people using it every day.

ChiDesign in action: Our thoughtful approach to transformation

Our unique ChiDesign approach (Cure, Harmonize, Inspire) takes a holistic view of a space, addressing function, flow, and self-expression to create a home that feels like you. Here’s how we applied it to this bathroom makeover

Cure: Identifying the functional fixes

Before making any changes, we diagnosed the space: What wasn’t working? The biggest culprits were:

  • An oversized jacuzzi tub that ate up too much space (and was rarely used)

  • A deep, built-in vanity that felt bulky and heavy in the room while limiting usable floor space

  • An overwhelming amount of warm tile that made the space feel darker, visually heavy, and more enclosed than it needed to be.

We focused on practical cures like downsizing the tub to the actual size needed, swapping the vanity for a more space-conscious option, carrying the tile flooring into the shower space, and adjusting materials so that warm tones were balanced with cool ones.

Harmonize: Creating flow and visual balance

Since this bathroom connects to the rest of the home, we considered its relationship to adjacent spaces. The new design needed to feel cohesive, not like an isolated update. To improve flow and visual harmony, we:

  • Chose classic tile patterns and crisp white finishes to brighten and unify the space on both sides of the room

  • Used a furniture-style vanity in warm wood tones to reference natural elements in the home and add interest, texture, and character

  • Took tile all the way to the ceiling to create a sense of height and spaciousness. This helped a 9 foot ceiling feel like 10.

Inspire: Infusing personality and style

Once we had the function and flow dialed in, it was time to bring personality. This is where styling and self-expression shine. Instead of defaulting to trends, we focused on making the space feel good, tailored to the homeowner’s preferences for meaningful natural elements sourced from her own collection.

  • The vanity was inspired by a vintage apothecary aesthetic, bringing historic charm and story into the room. Its warm wood added depth, texture, and balanced contrast against the cool whites.

  • A quartz countertop with subtle veining that matched the tile grout, introduced an organic feel while providing a light-friendly reflective surface

  • Thoughtfully chosen details (hardware, lighting, accessories) made the space feel custom and curated. The carved Aspen wood vases (sourced near Aspen, Colorado, from naturally fallen trees) contrast with the quartz countertop and reference the wood vanity as well as the cedar shelf above the freestanding tub.

The result? A stunning transformation that didn’t require a full tear-down — just thoughtful, strategic updates within the existing footprint Visual and functional impact!

The Power of a Thoughtful Update

By following our ChiDesign approach, we created both real and perceived space, making this bathroom feel brighter, airier, and timeless, within an existing floor plan.
